Limited Release

010B (Bonus) - CGLE Hybrid 17 Natural

Staying true to its original incarnation, this natural offering provides an intensely sugary profile of elegant, condensed sweetness.

When the chance arose to secure this tiny amount of this natural Hybrid17 we didn’t hesitate. Presenting this alongside its washed twin, we love the ability to showcase both approaches to this incredibly precious coffee.

This natural-process lot has undergone careful mechanical drying, and we are proud to be the only roaster presenting both approaches this season. The cup stays true to its original incarnation, offering an intensely-sugary profile of elegant, condensed sweetness.

Created with a plan to increase resistance by crossing selected Caturra and Gesha plants, research began in 2011, with the first selection of Caturra planted in CGLE’s Potosi farm, and the hybrid version planted in 2014. Three years later and the initial harvest showed an expected lack of complexity in the cup, but the team persevered, looking for healthier, more fruitful trees as well as a compelling flavour-profile. With a Gesha varietal selected from Cerro Azul farm (where Gesha is cultivated exclusively),, the new hybrid was planted in 2017 in one of Potosi’s very highest plots at 1860 masl.

Café Granja La Esperanza has long been a source of immense joy and wonder for us at Colonna, with some of our most memorable coffee-experiences beginning their lives with the trailblazing team led by Don Rigoberto, part of the third generation at the family-run estate.

This year, two members of our team were offered the incredible chance to visit in-person, and in May, James and Ben gallantly took on this task of representing Colonna overseas. Heading to the farms of CGLE in Colombia, seeing the exact plants of this Limited Release Rare and even planting their very own coffee plants (Mandela and Gesha) in the ‘Field of Dreams’ on Finca Las Margaritas.
