Gesha Beans
A coffee defined by gentle florals that develop throughout the cup, complemented by balanced acidity and a long, sweet finish.
Significant setbacks sometimes create the space needed for growth. The story of Finca Miraflores is a great illustration of this point.
Between 2011 and 2013, the Latin American coffee leaf rust epidemic ravaged farms across Peru, affecting roughly 40% of the country’s coffee-growing area. National production declined by around 24%, and Miraflores was hit particularly hard, losing many of its productive coffee plants. At the time, the farm was planted almost entirely with Typica, a variety especially vulnerable to the disease.
These difficulties set the stage for a new chapter in the farm’s development.
Some damaged trees were cut back to 60 centimetres and carefully regenerated, while new varieties were introduced across selected areas of the farm. Many producers might have turned to a disease-resistant variety such as Catimor, the team at Miraflores chose a different path. They diversified by planting exotic varieties such as Gesha, Bourbon, Java and SL-28. Growing these varieties presents its own challenges, but the decision opened up new economic opportunities within the specialty coffee market.
Miraflores’ Gesha trees produced their first cherries in 2021. We are pleased to feature one of those newer lots: a naturally processed Gesha with exceptional clarity.
